Iran Strikes Israeli Territory: Israel Calls Emergency UNSC Meeting, Demands ‘Terrorist’ Tag for IRGC: In the aftermath of Iranian drone strikes on its territory, Israel has called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The country demands a firm condemnation of Iran and the designation of its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, expressed outrage in a letter to the Security Council president. He cited the recent attack on Israel by Iran as a violation of Security Council resolutions, fostering instability and posing a serious threat to international peace and security.
According to Israel, the Iranian attacks included more than 200 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles launched towards Israeli territory. These actions are deemed a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law.
The Israeli statement also highlighted Iran’s ongoing breaches of international obligations, including the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah. It accused Iran of being the architect of instability through its support for various proxies such as Hamas, the Houthis, and Hezbollah.
Israel emphasized that Iran’s actions pose a direct threat to international peace and security. It called on the Security Council to address what it termed the “Iranian threat” with concrete action.
In response to the Iranian drone strikes, the United Kingdom has deployed additional Royal Air Force jets and air refueling tankers to the region. These jets will intercept airborne threats within the UK’s existing mission range.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, stated that Israel intercepted a majority of the Iranian strikes. Hagari noted that Iran launched various types of drones, including lethal ones, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to defending its territory against any threats.
The escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel highlights the volatile situation in the region, with both sides accusing each other of aggression and violations of international law. As the situation unfolds, the international community faces the challenge of preventing further escalation and maintaining stability in the region.
